“Venerable Lady Crosses Divide :
Mrs. John Cleary, Credit River Resident for Years, Dies in St Paul”

Mrs. Honora Cleary, venerable old lad, a resident of Credit River for many years before going to St Paul, has crossed the treat divide. In her taking away death has removed another of Minnesota’s sturdy pioneer women, who with courage and Christian faith, helped to hew a great state out of a thickly forested wilderness.

Born at County Limerick, Ireland on January 18, 1839, Mrs. Cleary had areached the grand old age of 92 years and past. When seven years old she came with her parents to Quebec, Canada landing there in the year 1846. Their residence there was of short duration, going from Quebec to New York where they remained for a short time before moving to the State of Indiana where they lived for 5 years. Following their removal from Indiana they lived in Illinois for about a year. They then came to St Paul, going from there Eagentown in Dakota County. From there they moved to Nicols in 1861. In the autumn of the same year the deceased was united in marriage to John Cleary who took his bride to Credit River. Fifty-seven years of her life were spent in Credit River on the farm, a part of which was afterwards conveyed to St. Peter’s Parish for a church building and cemetery. In this cemetery Mrs. Cleary was finally laid to rest.

Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Cleary of which five are living. They are Rev. Father J.P. Cleary, pastor of St Thomas church, Minneapolis, Mrs. J.C. Donovan and Mrs. T.F. White of St. Paul, Mrs. Margaret McCarthy, Prior Lake and George Cleary of St. Paul. Two others, Nellie who died in infancy and Mrs. M.C. Mc McCarthy some years ago at Belle Plaine. Her husband passed on in 1902, 29 years ago. She is survived by 15 grandchildren, all of whom but two were present at the funeral. Also one sister, Mrs. C. Moss of St. Louis and one brother, George Scott of Mendota.

In the fall of 1918 Mrs. Cleary went with her son George to live in St. Paul where she resided until her death which occurred on Thursday, June 18, last, due to the infirmities of age. She had not been well for about seven years. However, she was able to be about until four weeks prior to her demise when she took to her bed. All of her living children were with her at the time of her death, ministering to her comfort to the last.

The funeral took place from St. Peter’s church, Credit River, June 20. A solemn requiem mass was intoned with her son, Father J.P. Cleary celebrant, Father Clarus Graves of Collegeville, MN, deacon Father McRaith, sub-deacon and Father Deere as master of ceremonies. The mass music was played by Mrs. W.L. Morton, directoress of the St. Thomas choir, Minneapolis, with Charles McNulty as tenor soloist.

The Rosary Sodality of which the deceased wa a member attended the funeral in a body. The pallbearers were John Barbeau, John Sexton, John Grady, Dennis Doody, Martin Garvey, John Welsh, all of St. Paul and Dennis Murphy and J.E. Farley of Prior Lake and Credit River respectively. Interment was in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Besides the reverend fathers who officiated at the church ceremony, 13 other priests wre in attendance. They were Father Carey, Rosemount; Father Minouge, Belle Plaine; Father Cogwin, and Father Troy, St. Paul; Fathers Smith, Malone, Murphy and Seifert, Minneapolis; Father Tenlon, California; Father Crawley, St. Paul; Father Barry, Assumptions; Father Kane, Savage; and Father Farrell, St. Patrick, Sister Walburga, a life long friend of the deceased, also attended the funeral. Besides these, friends of the venerable lady from Minneapolis, St. Paul, Litchfield, Farmington, Shakopee, Lakeville, Prior Lake, Savage, St. Joe, Jordan, St. Catherinem St. Patrick, New Market, Chaska, Belle Plaine and Tyron, Wisconsin came.
