Upon starting in Mishcot Public School the teacher had several students name Mary in this one room school house. She took it upon hershelf to "rename" the gilrs. Our Mary thus became Mamie and she used the name the rest of her life.
Upon completion of her schooling she held various jobs including employment by "a rich lady whose husband owned a large furniture store. Here she learned the grce of home making. She and her gil firnends oftne attended dances and thus met the man she later married.
Mamie married Olive Kerwin Barnard Nov 3, 1924 in Waukegan, Ill. Two sons where born int this Union..Robert (Bob) George and John (Jack) James.
The family cam west settling in Nespelem, WA area in 1935. August 1955 they moved to 318 Columbia in Coulee Dam and buying their home on Jan 2, 1959.
Mamie was a marvelous cook and home maker. She enjoyed her years as a cook in the Nespelem schools and followed all school and sport activites of her sons. She always had a huge garden and was famous for her rasberries shared by so many while enjoying her wonderful hospitality, lovely dinners and fun card games.
She was a avid bowler and with "the other girls" attended varous bowling tourneys. Upon reaching 80 years of age she decided she was getting "Too old" for this sport but never missed a Green Bay Packer footbal game on TV.
She was able to stay in her own home until a few months before her 100th birthday. Her family celebrated this joyous occasion with her at the Grand Coulee Nursin Home Dec 2003.
She left sons Bob (Betty) and Jack (Pat), 6 grandchildren, Bob, Susan, Carol, Jerry, David, and Bill and 10 Great Grandchildren.
