He was born in McDowell County to the late William Haskel Nelson and Cozy Jane Isaacs Nelson.
He was a decorated veteran of the Korean War having been awarded the Purple Heart and the Silver Star.
Surviving are 3 sons, Roger Nelson of Greensboro, NC, Joel Nelson and Mark Nelson both of Marion; one daughter, Lesa Silver of Dysartville, N.C.; 2 brothers, Harold Nelson of Marion and Carbet Nelson of Glenwood, N.C.; one sister, Bessie Horton of Glenwood, N.C.; 2 granddaughters, Lyndsay Gragg and Casee Nelson.
Graveside services were held at 11 am on Tuesday, February 11, 2003 at Glenwood Cemetery. The Rev. Sumter West officiated.
