Dale Barnes, 88, Onaga, formerly of Havensville, died July 23, 2008, at a Topeka hospice. He was born Dec. 18, 1919, at Soldier, the son of Fred and Maybelle Rule Barnes. He graduated from Soldier High School in 1939. Mr. Barnes served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 35th Division Infantry and received a Bronze Star. He was a school bus driver for Havensville and Onaga schools for 19 years. He was a 60-year member of American Legion Post 333 at Havensville, and a lifetime member of VFW Post 2187. He married Maurene Biester on Nov. 15, 1948, in Arkansas. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Kenneth Barnes and wife Waunita, Havensville, and Raynard Barnes and wife Marlae, Topeka; a daughter, Gail Brenner and husband Rodney, Soldier; a sister, Marjorie White, Centralia; two brothers, Don Barnes and wife Ruth, Topeka, and Raymond Barnes, Prairie View; five grandchildren, Nicki Curtis, Kyli Brenner, Cole Barnes, Wyatt Barnes and Brandi Fritz; two stepgrandchildren, Thomas Watt and Jamie Watt; seven great-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dallas Barnes and Freddie Barnes; and three sisters, Evelyn Barnes, Ethel Barnes and Vivian Barr. Services were held July 25 at Tessendorf-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga. Burial with military honors followed in Soldier Cemetery.
