Gust William Swanson was born on December 2, 1908 in Karlshamn, Sweden to Ole and Vendela (Karlsson) Swanson. In 1910, Gust came to the United States with his parents and they settled in Superior. In 1912, they moved to Blackhoof Township where Gust lived and attended school. Later, Gust moved to Chicago where he worked as a meatcutter. On September 7, 1952; Gust married Louise Denmeyer in Chicogo. They lived in Chicago until 1952 when they moved to Blackhoof Township. Gust managed the meat department at the Cloquet Co-op Store until retiring in 1973. He also farmed through the years. He was a member of Elim Lutheran Church. Gust lived in Barnum, MN and was visiting his son in Mankato when he died.
Gust was preceded in death by his wife, Louise in 1982; his parents: Ole and Wendela Swanson; four brothers: Toge Swanson, Kurt Swanson, Hjalmer Swanson, and Percy Swanson; one sister: Vera Selen.
Survivors include son: Ken (Jean Klosowski) Swanson of Mankato; a daughter: Karen (Russell) Smith of Cloquet; a brother: Erland "Cap" (Louise) Swanson of Barnum; a sister: Olga (Harold) Baker of Carlton; four grandchildren: Carolyn Kassebaum, Allison Ballou, William Swanson, and Mara Swanson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
