Francis E. ‘Buck' Bailey 75, of 1572 N. West St. Galesburg, IL, died at 6:38 PM Monday September 17, 2001 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, IL. His funeral will be 3:30 PM Friday September 21, 2001 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Grulke and Mrs. Marilyn Anell officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday September 20, 2001 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to Frances Dianne Bailey Scholarship Fund at the First United Methodist Church.
He was born on November 16, 1925 in Toponas CO to James R. and Cora Ellen (Adams) Bailey. He married Mary Ann Sullens in Oblong IL on December 16, 1951. She survives. He was an independent certified financial planner and was the Chief Executive Officer of the Bailey Financial Group since 1984, retiring in 1999. He began his work career teaching at the Stonington (IL) High School in 1951. He then was an administrator at the Oregon (IL) Elementary School and then worked in marketing for Amoco Oil. In 1955 he began his career with Country Companies as an agent in Mattoon IL. From 1959 to 1963 he was the manager of the Clinton IL offices. From 1963 to 1984 he managed the Galesburg offices.
He was past president of the Galesburg Life Underwriters. He was a past director of the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce, Soangetaha Country Club, the Carl Sandburg College Foundation. He also served as a trustee on the Administrative Board at the First United Methodist Church in Galesburg.
He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Bloomington Consistory. He was a member of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners. He authored articles for Life Insurance Selling magazine and co-authored with his son James Bailey a chapter in the book "Creative Action in Organizations." A 1943 graduate of Willow Hill (IL) High School and a 1948 graduate of Eastern Illinois University, he received a masters degree from the University of Illinois in 1951. He was a naval aviator during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Mary A. Bailey of Galesburg, IL; a son, Dr. James R. Bailey of Washington, DC; two daughters, Mrs. Merlon (Leanne) Schuneman of Western Springs, IL and Mrs. Brian (Cindy) Shanahan of New Concord, OH; two sisters, Sharon Nickl of Chesterfield, MO and Florence Woodyard of Charleston, IL and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Dianne Bailey on November 26, 1975, and two brothers.
