William James Levitt was born to Noah Levitt (6-9-1799 to 1-9-1856) and Mary Phillips Levitt (10-22-1811 to 11-30-1898). He married Lydia Ann Wammack on 3-16-1854.

They were staunch members of the Christian Church and good business people. They lived one mile east of Sailor Springs on Levitt Prarie, Pixley Township, Clay County, Illinois.

They were the parents of Charles Levitt.
