Thank you for this contribution Ms. Clyde (#46994776):
Dr. Giovanni Bucolo, noted chemist and philanthropist, will be most remembered for his generosity to the UCSD Shiley Eye Center, the USCD Cardiovascular Center, the San Diego County Humane Society, and the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. But he was equally generous with his friends, and always shared the many fruits of his business success. Dr. Bucolo passed away at the age of 85 years at the UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest on June 14, 2006, after a short illness.
Born in Arezzo, Italy-the city made famous by Roberto Benigni in the film "Life is Beautiful"-Dr. Bucolo earned a Doctor's Degree in Organic and Biological Chemistry at the University of Florence in 1950.
After coming to the United States in the early 1950s, he practiced Clinical Chemistry at the New York Medical School and Hospital. In 1955, he moved to San Diego with his wife, Rina, and became Chief Biochemist and Assistant Director of Laboratories for the newly-built Sharp Hospital. He and Rina later performed research at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation for several years.
After serving as Director of Diagnostic Research at Calbiochem and General Atomic, Dr. Bucolo-in 1978-founded Reagents Applications, Inc., which under his leadership and vision, developed a catalogue of over 100 diagnostic reagents and distributed them throughout the world.
In 1988, Finland's Kone Corporation purchased the company from Dr. Bucolo, who remained as its President and CEO through 1992. In appreciation and recognition of Dr. Bucolo's efforts, the Finnish Government made him a Knight of the Order of the White Rose of Finland. Dr. Bucolo was a renown and innovative clinical chemist, who developed, perfected, and patented new techniques in analyzing blood chemistry. His technical expertise in this complex area of chemistry was unrivaled.
After his retirement, Dr. Bucolo continued to be active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Elks, the La Jolla Professional Men's Society, and the Southwester Yacht Club. He maintained a second home in Nevada, and served as an officer of the Las Vegas Augustus Society. But perhaps his most compelling social contribution related to his involvement as Director and benefactor of the San Diego County Humane Society.
Dr. Bucolo was the epitome of a humane and cultured gentleman, unselfishly using his resources for the benefit of the community. He loved literature, music, and art, and considered them to be (to borrow from Sir William Osler) "the hormones that do for society what the thyroid gland does for the individual human being."
Survivors include his niece Nancy Pavely, who resides in New Jersey, and several relatives in Italy. A Funeral Mass was held at All Hallows Catholic Church in La Jolla on Monday, June 26, 2006.
