Sam Harkey was born December 2, 1878, in Kimble County, Texas, to Joe Mathias Harkey and Henrietta Jackson. The Courthouse and jail served as his home in his early years while his father was the Sheriff of San Saba County.
He married Gertrude Ryan in 1905 and later purchased a ranch in Irion County, Texas. Seven children were born to this union; six boys and one girl. The family moved to Sherwood when Sam was elected Sheriff of Irion County in 1924.
Sam died in 1950 after several years of failing health. He was laid to rest in the Merzton Cemetery.
