A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Newport, Perry County, August 20, 1861, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 19 as a private with Co. H, 47th Pennsylvania infantry, but died from typhoid fever in the regimental hospital at Camp Griffin. His brother Reuben Shatto Gardner served in the same company.
