Composer. He wrote light, witty, colorfully orchestrated music in the spirit of "Les Six", though he was not associated with that group. His works include "Escales" (1924) and "Divertissment" (1930) for orchestra, two operettas cowritten with Arthur Honegger, "L'Aiglon" (1937) and "Les Petites Cardinal" (1938), and scores for several films, among them Rene Clair's "The Italian Straw Hat" (1927), Orson Welles' "Macbeth" (1948), and Gene Kelly's "Invitation to the Dance" (1956). Ibert was born in Paris. He studied at the Paris Conservatory and won the Prix de Rome in 1919. From 1937 he was director of the French Academy in Rome and from 1955 to 1957 he directed the Opera Comique in Paris.
