HAYES, Dr. D.J.

HAYES—GOGGINS. In the city of Chilton on the 15th inst. By Rev. R.F. Lorrigan, Dr. D.J. Hayes of St. Nazianz and Miss Sarah J. Goggins of Chilton.
The doctor is one of the most successful practitioners in the county and seemed to be born to be a successful physician and to make some fair one happy. We wish the young couple success.

Dr. Dennis J. Hayes Chilton Times December 3, 1927

PROMINENT PHYSICIAN DIES
Word reached this city, Friday of last week of the death of Dr. D. J. Hayes, for many years prominent in medical circles in Milwaukee and a state and charter member of the Milwaukee council of the Knights of Columbus, at his home at 528 Stowell Avenue on the night of Nov. 23, 1927, following an illness of nearly five years, at the age of 74 years.
Dr. Hayes was a graduate of the Northwestern University of Evanston, Ill., in the class of 1880 and shortly after receiving his diploma he opened an office at St. Nazianz, Manitowoc County, where he remained for eight years and ministered to the sick and afflicted. On Nov. 15, 1881 he was married at Chilton to Miss Jennie Goggins, daughter of the late Hugh Goggins, a prominent citizen of Charlestown. He disposed of his practice in St. Nazianz and left for Vienna, Austria, where he took a post graduate course in surgery and upon his return he opened an office in Milwaukee where he enjoyed a large measure of success until he retired from practice.
Dr. Hayes was one of the founders of the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons which affiliated with Marquette University after that medical college was established. He was president of the Wisconsin Medical society in 1918 and an instructor in the Marquette medical college until he suffered a nervous breakdown in 1919. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Tri-State Medical Society, the Milwaukee Medical Society, the Wisconsin Medical Society and a fellow of American College of Physicians.
Dr. Hayes was recognized as a leader in his profession and a high type citizen. He enjoyed the good will and respect of all who were fortunate enough to know him intimately. The funeral was held on Saturday morning at 9:00 o'clock from St. Rose's Catholic Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Genevieve H. Smith and Miss Jane Hayes, both of Milwaukee, two brothers, Thomas of Richfield and Alexander of Pewaukee, and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Coghlin of West Bend and Mrs. Martha Horner of Milwaukee.
