E. W. Lewis came to Missouri from Virginia in 1836, first settling in Howard County, Mo. before moving into Saline County, Mo. He wrote letters detailing Missouri and Howard County circumstances in 1837 to his brother, William Walker Lewis, who remained in Culpeper County, Virginia. The letters are on file with the State Historical Society of Missouri.

Inscription

Deacon E. W. Lewis - Died Apl. 29, 1856 - Aged 40 years, 2 months & 11 days - "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." Erected as a token of love by his brethren - W.M.B.-A.B.L.-P.D.B. & L.B.H.

Gravesite Details

Futher inscription reads: "Brother thou art gone to rest; Thine is an early tomb; But Jesus summoned thee away, Thy Saviour called thee home."
