Cpl. Stewart, Co. D, 107th Supply Train, survived the torpedoing & sinking of the troopship "Tuscania" on 5 February 1918 in the North Channel between Scotland & Ireland by German submarine UB-77.

He returned from war aboard the "Virginian" in May 1919.

On both voyages, he listed his father, Alexander Stewart, Sr., Clintonville, Wisconsin, as his next-of-kin.

Alex Stewart, 86, a former Kiel resident, died Friday morning at Willowdale Nursing Home in New Holstein, where he had resided for the past two months. He was born June 1, 1895, in Clintonville, son of Alexander and Susan Sutherland Stewart. He attended school in Clintonville.
Mr. Stewart served in the U.S. Army during World War I, and was on board the S.S. Tuscania which was torpedoed off the coast of Ireland.
He married the former Rose Gagnon on Oct. 29, 1919, in Waupaca. The couple moved to Kiel where Mr. Stewart was employed at the Kiel Woodenware Co. until his retirement in 1961. Mrs. Stewart died in 1972. Mr. Stewart was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Kiel.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Kahle of Lake Geneva and Mrs. Kenneth (Lois) Grube of Kiel; three sons, Calvin of Marshfield, Herbert of Sheboygan, and Jack of Stockbridge; 36 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, one son, two grandsons, two sisters and one brother.
Private family funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Kiel. The Rev. Joe V. Anderson, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Kiel Cemetery.
