About R. L. Savoy
R. L., a native and resident of Church Point was a graduate of Church Point High School. He attended UL and graduated from Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa in 1958.
Dr. Savoy was one of the first practicing chiropractors in the State of Louisiana. He had been practicing in Church Point since 1959. His office is the oldest chiropractic office in the State of Louisiana.
In October 2002, Dr. Savoy was to receive a Life Time Achievement Award given by the Louisiana Chiropractor Association at the convention in New Orleans. His wife and family was there to accept the award.
He assisted many young chiropractors not only through education but starting them in their own practice.
He was a charter member of both the Louisiana Chiropractic Association and the American Chiropractic Association. He served three terms as the State Representative to the International Chiropractic Association.
He was involved in Church Point not only as a health care provider but as an active and proud member of the community.
He was instrumental in the organization of the Courir de Mardi Gras and the Church Point Buggy Festival.
In 1973, Dr. Savoy was named Mr. Centennial and in 1976 Mr. Bicentennial.
In 1985 he represented Church Point as chairperson for the Twinning of Church Point and Nova Scotia. Additionally he served as past present of the Church Point Lion's Club.
Funeral services were held Monday, September 16, 2002 at 1 p.m. for Dr. R. L. Savoy who died at 3:40 p.m. on September 14. Burial was in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Church Point, Louisiana.
Msgr. Fred Swenson officiated at the funeral mass and services.
R.L. is surved by his wife and companion of 45 years, Norma Belle Savoy; his son Chris Savoy and wife Connie Blair Savoy; four grandchildren, Tyler, Brandon, Christopher and Stephanie Savoy; two sisters Lula Savoy Boudreaux and Vivian Savoy Castille.
He was preceded in death by his son Mark Savoy and his parents, Moise and Eliza Savoy; two sisters, Isabella Savoy Melancon and Beatrice Savoy Venable.
