Mrs. Elvira A. Sonnenburg, age 89, of 8014 Carstens Lake Road, town of Newton, died late Thursday morning, October 10, 1996, at the Manitowoc Health CareCenter, where she had been residing for the past month.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 14, 1996, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Newtonburg. Rev. Victor Headrick will officiate with burial at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Newtonburg.
She was born January 29, 1907,in the town of Newton, Manitowoc County, where she had been a life long resident of the area, daughter of the late Edwin and Bertha Nass Carstens. She married Helmuth G. Sonnenburg, June 22, 1929, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Newtonburg. He preceded her in death February 24, 1985. Elvira and Helmuth had the honor of celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary June 22, 1984. She was a life long member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aide of the church. Elvira was also a chartermember of the Pine Rivers Hustlers Homemakers Club.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Donald Hammel, Manitowoc, Arlyle and Clifford Doxtator, Milwaukee; one brother, Harold Carstens, Manitowoc; five grandchildren, Keith (Rosaline) Hammel, David (Diana) Hammel, Dennis (Carol) Hammel, Daniel (Ginger) Hammel, Dawn (Timothy) Radue; 13 great-grandchildren, Steven Hammel, Scott Hammel, Shaun Hammel, Stacy Hammel, Stuart
Hammel, Carrie Hammel, Mark Hammel, Desiree Hammel, Deidre Hammel, Dustin Hammel, Dylan Hammel, Justin and Kaitlin Radue; one brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law, Walter and Eldora Sonnenburg, Manitowoc, Mrs. Sadie Dummer, Manitowoc, Mrs.Arlene Sonnenburg, Appleton, along with one uncle, two aunts, other (sic)relatives and friends surviving. Elvira was preceded in death by her parents,
her husband, Helmuth, four sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law.
Friends may call at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Newtonburg, from 4-8 p.m. Sunday and then on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.
A memorial fund is being established in her name.
The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
