Clarence grew up and attended high school in Casselton.
He married his high school sweetheart Jeanette Manners in
June 1925. They had a son John in 1926 who died in infancy. He started his career as a Jewel Tea salesman and lived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin for a time where their daughter, Helen Jeanette (Kistler) was born in 1928. They moved back to the Casselton area and ran a gas station there for several years before moving to a farm near Leonard, ND.
Clarence and Jeanette had 5 grandchildren. They spent several winters in Arizona for Clarence's asthma condition. Clarence raised hereford bulls and enjoyed "his pets".
