The family moved to St. Louis in 1848.  As they moved north, their son, having finished medical school, went to New Orleans, apparently to set up practice. On his father's death in 1857, Jeremiah Jr. returned to St. Louis and after 1859 took up his father's practice. The son remained in St. Louis until the end of the century, becoming president of the St. Louis Medical Society in 1864 and publisher of a medical journal in 1886.
