2nd Rhode Island Governor. The son of Colonial Royal Governor William Greene, he became a surveyor and served as a Deputy in the Rhode Island General Assembly. During the Revolutionary War, he served as Commander-in-Chief of the Rhode Island State Military. He also served as First Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Rhode Island, and was Chief Justice in 1778. In 1778, he was elected as the second Governor of Rhode Island, serving until 1786. After serving as Governor for nine years, he lived in retirement until his death at age 78.
