SGT, Company C, 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry, 25th Infantry Division (Tropic Lightning), Vietnam. Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart..... The unit this soldier served in was the 4th Battalion (Mechanized), 23rd Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. The nickname of the 25th Infantry Division was Tropic Lightning while the moniker of the 23rd Infantry Regiment was Tomahawks. The unit was awarded the Meritorious Unit Citation and the Presidential Unit Citation for its performance in Vietnam. The collective degree of valor the unit accomplished to receive the Presidential Unit Citation is equal to that which would warrant the award of the Distinguished Service Cross to an individual. The 25th Infantry Division, Tropical Lightning, lost 4,561 men in Vietnam. 7.8% of the names on the Vietnam Memorial are from this Division.
