Lt. Joseph Rafael de la Garza, from San Antonio, died in 1864 while fighting at the head of his company at the Battle of Mansfield, in Louisiana, during the Red River Campaign.
He was buried at the Mansfield battlefield. After the war ended his remains were recovered and re-interred at San Fernando Cemetery.
In 1876, the Texas Legislature named Garza County Texas in honor of Lt. Joseph de la Garza and his family.
