George J. Chakurda Sr, of Woodbridge died on Dec. 4, 2007, at Potomac Hospital.
George was born on Jan. 22, 1929, in Beaver Meadows, Pa. He married Helen Mehalko in 1956 and was a devoted husband for more than 50 years. He was also a loving father to Mary and her husband, Kirk Daubenspeck, George Jr. and his wife, Karon Chakurda, James and his wife, Carol Chakurda, Joseph and his wife Joy Chakurda; a loving grandfather to Tabitha Chakurda, Britnea and Chris St. John (and great granddaughter Kyleigh Elizabeth), Aaron Horney, Kirstin and Mitchell Nason, Donelle and Stephen Krull, and Gary and Lea Cooper. George is also survived by his loyal dog and faithful companion, Nikki.
George served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years before retiring in 1968, he then worked for the Department of the Army as a civilian for an additional 20 years. He was a life member of the American Legion where he served as past Commander at Post 364 and also an active member of Fourty and Eight. He was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church where he was an Usher and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Friends are invited to celebrate and honor the life of George on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Mountcastle Life Celebration Home, 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City, VA 22193. The Knights of Columbus will provide an honour guard and the American Legion will conduct a service at 4 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will take place on Tuesday Dec. 11, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, 13752 Mary's Way, Woodbridge, VA 22191 with interment to follow at Quantico National Cemetery. The American Legion Post 364 on Friendly Post Lane, Woodbridge is hosting and preparing a luncheon after the interment. The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to OWL Fire and Rescue.
