Services Thursday

John V. Stein, 56, resident of 1406 3rd St NW, Mandan, died in St. Alexius Hospital November 12th at 10:55 am. John, who was a farmer, a county bin supervisor for the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation, and a musician, had been in ill health the past 2 1/2 weeks.

He was born in Crown Butte (nw of Mandan) in Morton County May 13, 1906, the son of Vincent Stein and Anna Marie (Heinrich) Stein. He attended school at Richardton Abbey. He married Margaret Boehm at St. Vincent's Church on October 20, 1925. They moved to Mandan on December 23, 1952.

John was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, St. Vincent's Verein, and the American Federation of Musicians. John played the tuba with local orchestras. John also played accordian and piano with local bands; he really enjoyed music. He also enjoyed fishing, so he and Margaret would go almost every weekend right after work. They would take lunch along on Fridays, and she would sit in the car until he got off work; then they would head for their fishing spot.

In addition to his wife, he leaves the following children: Daniel (Mary) of Mandan; Anna "Ann" (Peter) Ferderer (Florian) Frank, of New Salem & Dickinson; Robert W. (Viola) of Halliday & Minot; and Paul D. (Judy) Stein of Minot; 16 grandchildren and 4 sisters, Mrs. George Bender of St. Anthony; Mrs. Jacob Boehm of rural Mandan; Mrs. Ralph Hatzenbuhler of Mandan; and Mrs. Joe Hoffman of St. Anthony.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, and 1 brother.

Services were held at Christ the King Church at 11 am Thursday with Msgr. A. J. Galowitsch officiating. Interment was made in Mandan Union Cemetery. Pallbearers were Leo Stein, Vincent Boehm, Lloyd Boehm, Ray Hoffman, Clarence Bender, and James Hatzenbuhler. Honorary pallbearers were A.X. Koch, Erwin Lang, Steve Gratz, Anton Kautzmann, Adam Gratz, & Wilmer Held.

Friends called at the Hoenig Funeral Home (now Weigel Funeral Home). The parish rosary was said at the Funeral Home at 8 pm Tuesday, and St. Vincent's Verein said the rosary there at 8:30 Tuesday.
