Claire Viola is the only child of Frederick Harry Stallman (1868-1931) and Eva Elizabeth Miller (1867-1908).
My middle name is Claire, for my grandmother, and it is sad that I never met her or got a grandmother hug from her, but she lived in Maryland and we lived in Los Angeles and our family of seven could not afford to make the trip and she could not make the trip out to us. She died in 1960 before we were was old enough to visit on our own. She wrote regularly and once in a while sent a photo. We would have family calls and it was hard because in those days, the lag in the voices long distance made it difficult to have a conversation!
I wished I could have known her better.
She lived for years in Poolesville, MD and later with her daughter Helen C. Eyster Tillack in Frederick, Maryland. Helen and her husband Ed had no children. Both Grandmother Eyster and Aunt Helen were very interested in the history of the area, of York, PA and of the country. We ended up with very few photos.
Grandmother Eyster did not live long enough to see her grandchildren in college and start careers and families. I think she would have taken pride in how everyone "turned out" and she definitely would have been able to contribute a lot to the conversations about family!

Grandmother Eyster-- I am proud that Claire is my middle name. I am sorry we lived so far apart and you never got to meet me or the other four California grandchildren. So here is a hug sent to you in the heavens.|
