Sarah Catherine Clay was born on 14 Apr 1853 in Georgia to Joseph F. Clay and Elizabeth Johnson Clay.

According to the 1860 Census, Sarah was living with her parents in Haralson County, GA. Sarah's siblings living in the household were: Washington P., Susan, Martha J., Missouria, and Hosea.

According to the 1870 Census, Sarah was still living with her parents in Haralson County, Georgia. Her siblings were: Hosea, Misouria, Susan, Sidney, and Elizabeth. Sarah was listed as "attending school."

On 21 Oct 1873, she married John Benjamin McGuire in Haralson County, Georgia.

According to the 1880 Census, Sarah Clay McGuire was living with her husband, John Benjamin McGuire, in Haralson County, Georgia. Their children living in the household were: Joseph T., Martha Louola, and Mary E. Sarah was listed as "keeping house" on the census.

According to the 1900 Census, Sarah C. McGuire (McWire on the census) and her husband were living in Smithfield District, Carroll County, Georgia. Their three children who were living in the household were Oscar, Jane, and Annie Ardelia. Sarah was listed as being able to read and write on the census.

According to the 1910 Census, Sarah Clay McGuire was living with her husband in Carroll County, Georgia. There was a Foster King living with them at the time; the relationship to the family was not listed on the census.

According to the 1920 and 1930 Censuses, Sarah Clay McGuire was living in Carroll County, Georgia with her husband and granddaughter, Ila Belle McGuire. John B. and Sarah McGuire raised Ila Belle from the time that she was an infant.

Sarah Catherine Clay McGuire died 11 Jan 1938 at the home of her granddaughter, Ila Belle McGuire Bearden, with whom she was living at the time. According to her obituary written by her granddaughter-in-law, Doris Barrow King, she had suffered with Asthma and Heart Trouble during her last few years.

She was buried at Poplar Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Carroll County, Georgia.
