|Birth: ||Feb. 10, 1920|
|Death: ||May 24, 1941, England|
Stoker 1st Class Cyril Arthur James Dean was one of 1415 Sons of England who died on the morning of 24, May 1941 in the sinking of HMS Hood. The German battleship Bismarck launched one torpedo at Hood, which struck the ship directly in its' ammunition magazine, and within one minute, Hood had disappeared from the surface of the ocean.
There were only three survivors.
The HMS Hood Website lists personal remembrances of Cyril which are quite interesting - for instance, Cyril was the friend of future Oxford Lord Mayor Olive Gibb. She remembered her childhood friend in her autobiography, which can be found quoted on the same site; Cyril also worked at the age of fourteen years for the Vicarage of St. Thomas the Martyr.
There is little personal information listed, however, regarding whether Cyril was married and so forth at the time of his loss; we know only that his parents' names were John and Daisy, and that Cyril originally trained to become a fireman.
He was 21 years old at the time of his loss.
Cyril is memorialized on both the Portsmouth Naval Memorial - Panel 55, Column #1, as well as at St. Thomas the Martyr Parish Church, Oxford; he is also memorialized at Hood Chapel, Church of St. John the Baptist, Boldre, Hampshire.
"These heroes are dead. They died for liberty - they died for us. They are at rest. They may or may not sleep in the land they made free, under the flag they rendered stainless, under the solemn pines, the sad hemlocks, the tearful willows, and the embracing vines. They sleep beneath the shadows of the clouds, careless alike of sunshine or of storm, each in the windowless Place of Rest. Earth may run red with other wars - they are at peace. In the midst of battle, in the roar of conflict, they found the serenity of death. I have one sentiment for soldiers living and dead: cheers for the living; tears for the dead." ~Robert G. Ingersoll
