Her family lived in Wichita, Kansas until 1889 when they moved to Guthrie, Oklahoma.
Later she moved to Wellston, Carney, and Fallis, Oklahoma.
She was not schooled beyond her sixth grade year, and learned her knowledge of literature from books and short stories.
At an early age, she wrote poetry; later submitting it to Wichita Eagle, a Kansas newsletter.
Vingie attended Oklahoma A&M for six months in 1902.
Submitting her first novel; Maid of the Whispering Hills to Dodd, Mead & Co. It was published right away.
Vingie met Raymond C. Lawton in New Orleans in 1906. As Raymond was in the Navy, their courtship began and was sustained until marriage by correspondence. They were married on April 12, 1907, the next month leaving for the Rougue River Valley in the State of Oregon. There, they owned a fruit farm.
Vingie divorced Raymond and moved to California. Living there with her Mother until her death.
