------------------
Mary Ann Baker Carroll--In memory of my mother who was born in Franklin county, Ga., May 26th, 1819, and died in Chattooga county, May, 1893, aged 73 years eleven months and twenty-three days.
She was the mother of eight children, six sons and two daughters, two little sons having died in infancy. She left a husband, four sons and two daughters to mourn her loss, but we sorrow not as those who have no hope. She was a mother in the true sense of the word, always counseling husband and children for the right. She was a woman of great firmness, teaching her children to "honor thy father and mother," which is the only promise we have of a long life. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for fifty-seven years, and by her Godly walk, adorned her profession of Christ. Her home was the home of the minister, where she delighted to welcome the servants of the Master.
She had been in bad health for many years and was a great sufferer, but now she is gone where there is no more pain and sorrow. She said to the writer, when I left her the eighth day of last February: "George, I never expect to see you again this side of the judgement bar of God." We felt so sad, so lonely, when we received the sad news that mother was dead. She is not dead but sleepeth. Our loss is her eternal gain. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. May we all be guided by Him who watches even the sparrow's fall. -------- G. P. C.
