MIKKEL P. SPILDE, ILL 15 YEARS, DIES FRIDAY AT NORTHWOOD HOME
Resident of County Since 1875; Had Been Blind 12 Years; Funeral Monday
Mikkel P. Spilde, 80, resident of Worth county since 1875, died at his home on Fourth street Friday after an illness of about fifteen years, the last twelve of which had brought the added affliction of blindness.
Funeral rites were conducted by the Rev. J. W. Ylvisaker Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home and at 2 o'clock at the Northwood Lutheran church. Burial was made in Sunset Rest cemetery.
Those from a distance who came to attend the funeral were John Spilde, a brother, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Spilde, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Spilde and two children, Mr. and Mrs. Helmer Spilde and daughter, Mrs. Otte Otteson, Decorah; Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Filkins, Mrs. C. P. Larsen, Mrs. Paul Peterson, Miss Magnel Johnsom, Miss Marie Fryderlund, Albert Lea; Mr. and Mrs. V. L. Klove, Iowa Falls; Mrs. Frank Conway, Mason City.
Mikkel Paulson Spilde was born January 30, 1851, in Hardanger, Norway. His parents were Paul J. and Anna Spilde. He was baptized in infancy and in 1859 when he was but a boy the family came to America and settled on a farm near Decorah, Iowa. Here with his older brothers the responsibility of providing for a large family was assumed and the farm work carried on, the father having been called to serve in the Civil War from which he never returned.
At the age of fourteen years he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by the Rev. Mr. Jenson.
In the fall of 1875 Mr. Spilde came to Worth county, and on November 19 of the same year he was united in marriage to Kristine Sonve, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. O. Nilson. Mr. and Mrs. Spilde settled on the prairie in Kensett township. Here he worked, oftentimes enduring the hardships of early pioneer days, for twenty-five years.
In the spring of 1890 Mr. Spilde moved his family from the old homestead to the farm one mile south of Northwood in order that his children might be given a better opportunity to attend the Northwood schools and the church if their chosen faith. This place continued to be his home for another quarter of a century.
About fifteen years ago Mr. Spilde's health began to fail and for the last eleven and one-half years he had been totally blind. In October, 1925 the family moved to Northwood where he resided until his death.
Surviving him are his wife. Kristine, two sons, Elmer and Leonard of Northwood; and four daughters, Clara, (Mrs. A I Butler), Spokane, Wash,; Nellie, (Mrs. E S. Fonda). Northwood; Mabel, (Mrs. C F. Thompson), Carpenter; and Etta, who lives at the home in Northwood. Three daughters, Matilda, Nettie, and Edna, preceded him in death. Eleven grandchildren, one brother, John Spilde, Decorah, and two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Seim, Fargo, N Dak.; and Mrs. Sigri Wold, Finley, N. Dak.; also survive him.
We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to the neighbors, friends and relatives who extended their sympathy and kidness in the loss of our dear husband and father. We wish especially to thank the Rev. J. W. Ylvisaker and the Rev. L. Tosdal for the words of comfort spoken during his illness and at the funeral. We are also grateful for the beautiful floral tributes and the money sent to missions in his memory.
Mrs. M. P. Spilde, and family.
