JAMES EDWARD GOENS, 92-year-old pioneer citizen of Roanoke, died Sunday morning at his home, 307 Bullitt Avenue, SE.
He came to Roanoke in 1884 from Amherst County, the year the town of 5,000 was incorporated as a city. At the time of his retirement in 1929 he was Assistant Foreman of the Norfolk and Western Foundry.
He was a charter member of Lakeland Masonic Lodge and Osceola Pythian Lodge. He was awarded a 50-year membership pin by the Pythians in 1937.
He also was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife Mrs. Mary L. Goens; three sons, Russell W. and Cyril J. Goens, Roanoke; Samuel C. Goens, Norfolk; three daughters, Mrs. G. W. Reed and Mrs. C. P. Bryant, Roanoke and Mrs. W. P. Shockley, Jr., Knoxville, Tennessee. Other survivors are two brothers Calvin Goens, Roanoke; Leonard Goens, Hilton Village; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be conducted at Oakey's Chapel, Tuesday, November 3, 1953, at 2:30 p.m. with Dr. John E. Richards officiating. Grandsons will be pallbearers. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park.
