Pleasant was the son of Nathaniel Dobbs Nowlin and Mahala (Anderson) Nowlin. He was married three times. His first wife was Sarah Youstler (Beck) Nowlin (1834-1880). They were married on May 24, 1849 in Fayette County, Illinois. Sarah was the mother of William, John, Martha, Mary, Pleasant A., Lewis, Newton, Arthur and Franklin Nowlin. Pleasant's second wife was Matilda Elizabeth (Tash) Collins Hilton Nowlin (1833-1902). They were married on December 19, 1890 in Missouri. Plesant's third wife was Pernila A. Nowlin (1837-1916). Pleasant was a Veteran of both the Civil War and the Mexican-American War. Records show that Plesant was a Private in Co. A, 3rd Illinois Volunteers in the Mexican-American War. During the Civil War, he fought for the Union Army. He enlisted on April 1, 1862 at Mercer County, Missouri in Co. G, 3rd Missouri State Militia Cavalry and was discharged for disability in December, 1862 at Springfield, Missouri,
