Hans Hansen Bangen
Birth: Nov. 24, 1838
Hedmark fylke, Norway
Death: Mar. 11, 1923
Polk County
Minnesota, USA

Sand Hill parish's esteemed bell ringer died on the 11th of March, 1923, in his home near Climax, Minnesota. He was 84 years old. For 50 years he had served the parish as its bell ringer (pastor's assistant) and he had for many years given religious instruction to the children of the parish until some years ago, he had to stop his teaching because of his poor health.
Bangen has been a great help for the pastors who have served the parish and supported them in their work from the days of Pastor Hagbos until his death.
He loved Sand Hill parish and some of the last things he said when I visited him a few days before his death was that he was convinced that he was going home to God, but that he should like to come to the church one more time and say goodbye to the flock and encourage them to take care of God's work.
From his younger day he has been interested in missionary work. In particular he was interested in evangelism among the heathen and he collected money and encouraged people to help in this work.
Hans Bangen will be missed by everybody in this neighborhood and by those who knew him, but most of course by his closest relatives. He was a rare personality and to know him was to love him.
He was born in Osterdalen, Norway, December 24, 1838; he was confirmed October 17, 1855 (in Bardu, Norway), came to America in December of 1866. Settled in Freeborn County, Minnesota. Married to Eline Thompson, May 30, 1870. Came to these parts in the summer of 1873 and in 1874 to his home where he has lived until his death.
He is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. John (Mina) Saugstad, Crookston, Minn; Hans Anton Bangen, Sanish, ND; Mrs. Peter (Marie) Houske, Halstad, Minn; Mrs. H. D. (Clara) Estenson, Sanish, ND; Mrs. J. M. (Thea) Stubson, Raub, ND; Mrs. O. M. (Laura) Stromsmoe, Alberta; Theodore Bangen, Sanish, ND; and Helmer Bangen, living on the home farm. In addition, he is survived by 28 of his 33 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The funeral service was held Sunday, March 18. The church was filled by relatives and friends who took part in the family's grief. In addition to the beautiful flowers on the casket, there were two wreaths that never wither, in that Sand Hill parish made a memorial donation to the mission for $30. Ringsaker parish gave $10 to the mission. He was put to rest at Sand Hill parish cemetery. Blessed be his memory. Ludvig Pedersen, Parish Pastor
