Darrel was the best and most patient fisherman. One time perch kept nibbling at his grasshopper he had on his hook and instead of changing bait he kept fishing with the grasshopper, which by this time was down to just the mid section with the wings. He continued fishing with that for about 30 minutes. He landed a 12 lb bass out of the weeds. He definetely taught me patience.
Darrel bravely fought Hotchkins Lymphoma Cancer for more than 5 years before finally saying he had enough of the needles and chemotherapy. After being told he'd only live a few more months he made some request that we did our best to honor. Cousin Clif Leatherwood and I arranged for him to ride in a Semi across Oklahoma. He got to ride in a Small plane and helicopter thanks to a local TV station. His brothers Cody and Weldon made sure he got to go fishing as much as possible. Darrel and his brother Cody, Me and my brother Mark Leatherwood went down the Illinois River in western Oklahoma. Darrel was in my Canoe with Mark and Cody in another. I surprised Darrel with a few bottle rockets which he fired from the front of our canoe towards our brother's. It was a perfect day.
Darrel passed away a couple weeks later at his Grandmothers house in Yukon Oklahoma. In keeping with his wishes of no needles, according to Oklahoma law, we buried him in Frisco Cemetery the same day he passed. I miss him and also miss the Great Man he was to become.
