Little Stella died at age of 2 yrs on Christmas Eve in a fire in her home. Her parents were immigrants from Lithuania and were listed on the 1920 Christian County census (Betout) with 3 children and on the 1930 Vermillion County census (Bitout) with 4 children. Her father was a coal miner. Her parents are most likely the Bitouts who are buried in Westville Lithuanian Cemetery in Westville, Vermilion County, IL.
Joys of a Christmas shopping trip turned to tears that will leave their stain for life, today when Mrs. Tony Betot returned from a gift-buying trip to find her home in ruins and her 3 year old daughter, Stella, dead in the dying embers. Tony, jr., 4 years old, escaped by leaping through a window. He could tell little of the tragedy, but it is believed that the children were playing around the fireplace when the place caught fire. The house, a frame affair, burned like tinder and the little girl was unable to escape.
So tonight, the fireplace, where their stockings were to have hung, is only a mass of disintegrated bricks, some of the stony evidence of the tragedy. Mrs. Betot, who is in an hysterical condition, had left the house only a short time when the blaze broke out. She left the children alone for a few moments while she completed her Christmas shopping, only to return to find their little home a mass of embers, with the gifts already purchased reduced to charcoal.
