Little Stella died at age of 2 yrs on Christmas Eve in a fire in her home. Her parents were immigrants from Lithuania and were listed on the 1920 Christian County census (Betout) with 3 children and on the 1930 Vermillion County census (Bitout) with 4 children. Her father was a coal miner.
Joys of a Christmas shopping trip turned to tears that will leave their stain for life, today when Mrs. Tony Betot returned from a gift-buying trip to find her home in ruins and her 3 year old daughter, Stella, dead in the dying embers. Tony, jr., 4 years old, escaped by leaping through a window. He could tell little of the tragedy, but it is believed that the children were playing around the fireplace when the place caught fire. The house, a frame affair, burned like tinder and the little girl was unable to escape.
So tonight, the fireplace, where their stockings were to have hung, is only a mass of disintegrated bricks, some of the stony evidence of the tragedy. Mrs. Betot, who is in an hysterical condition, had left the house only a short time when the blaze broke out. She left the children alone for a few moments while she completed her Christmas shopping, only to return to find their little home a mass of embers, with the gifts already purchased reduced to charcoal. A family member (#47776848) has stated that Stella's parents, Tony Bitot (Anthony Bitautas) and Anna Janculis Betot, were both from Lithuania. They were living in Bulpit, Ill at the time. After Stella's death the parents moved to Detroit, MI, where they both passed away and are buried. There was no Anthony Jr. in the family. Her siblings were, Nellie, John, Stanley, Bowie, Anna in that order. There are still 2 living Aunts and 2 Uncles as of 2015.
