Smoky got his nickname because of his pitching ability in the semi-pro leagues in the Baton Rouge area. He pitched for the Fairfield Pressers and also for the Live Oak Athletics back in the 1930's. He was especially known for his fast-ball and struck out many of his opposing players.

Like his brother Cyril, Merlyn was an exceptional baseball player. Both brothers were two of the best pitchers in the Baton Rouge area in their time!
