Sewell Hopkins was born in Maine, son of Capt. Sewell Hopkins, Sr. He served in the Navy during the Civil War. He served on the USS North Carolina, USS South Carolina, USS Vermont and the USS Patapsco.
He married Mary Hildebrand of Manistee, Michigan on December 14, 1872.
