William Gleeson was born at Loughmore, Tipperary, Ireland, 1 May 1789, and was married at Thurles, Tipperary, to Joanna Callinan 24 November 1814. Their first son was born at St. John, Newfoundland, in 1815, and they moved to Boston within 2 years. William Gleeson had a boarding house and was a successful trader; the family lived in Boston, South Boston, and East Cambridge, and they had 14 children. William Gleeson was active in the Roman Catholic Church and served as Vice President of the Charitable Irish Society.
