Born in La Creek, South Dakota, now a Wildlife Refuge, to two mixed breed parents, she went to school in Martin, South Dakota, near Pine Ridge Reservation, surrounded by a large loving extended family, and the only youngster for several years. They moved to New Mexico where she graduated from high school. She graduated from business college, and worked in Billings, Montana for the Indian Service, and there she met her future husband at a Billings boarding house where they resided. They married there in 1938. They parented two daughters. They traveled the United States moving 40 times in the first 20 years of their 25 years together, before divorcing in 1964. She worked for Girl Scouts of America and the engineering department of Providence Hospital. She married Rily Patrick in 1973 and lived with him on the Arabian Horse ranch in Calistoga. She studied oil painting and art, eventually painting commissions for people. She became well known for her 'mini' vineyardscapes of the Napa Valley that she displayed in a Calistoga gallery.
