American death row inmate. He was convicted of the murder of 27 year old Mark Macphail, an off-duty Savannah, Georgia police officer working security at a Burger King August 19, 1989. In 1991 he was sentenced to death but after several appeals, the United States Supreme Court ordered federal districts in Georgia to consider whether new evidence could prove his innocence. Davis maintained his innocence and some witnesses changed their testimony. According to Tyler Harris account of the story, National and international attention and protest brought the case to the forefront and had the support of former president Jimmy Carter, Al Sharpton, Pope Benedict XVI, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former F.B.I director William S. Sessions. All calling upon the courts to grant a new trial. Protest rallies were held around the world the final day but the Georgia Board Of Pardons And Paroles made the final decision. Davis' execution was carried out September 21, 2011 at the Georgia Diagnostic And Classification State Prison in Jackson, Georgia. Son of Joseph L. Davis and Virginia Roberts Davis, he was a 1987 graduate of Richard Arnold High School. Hundreds attended a public Memorial Service at New Life Apostolic Temple September 30, 2011 and thousands attended Funeral Services October 1, 2011 at Jonesville Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia.
