Phebe Post
Birth: Oct. 20, 1772
Death: Jun. 3, 1854
Halton Regional Municipality
Ontario, Canada

Phebe's birth date was recorded as 20 Oct. 1767 according to a transcription of her daughter Mary (Fish) Kenney's family Bible record. Considering that her age at death is given as 81 years on her gravestone, it is presumed that the reference to 1767 was an erroneous repetition of her husband Joseph Fish's birth year. Her birth date is therefore shown as 20 Oct. 1772.

Phebe married first (or possibly second) to Joseph Fish by Feb. 1795, when their first child was born. Soon after Joseph's death, she remarried to Ezekiel Post on 19 Aug. 1814 in York (Toronto), ON. She died in Halton Co., ON.

Note: Phebe's maiden surname has been reported as Butt(s) by genealogists as early as 1938. However, it is possible that this was the name of her first husband. She might have been Phebe Gwinn, daughter of Jonathan Gwinn and Elizabeth Coleman, Quakers who lived in Nantucket, MA, and later Pawling, NY. Reportedly, Jonathan Gwinn's daughter Phebe married a non-Quaker named Butts in 1789, according to records of the Oblong (Pawling) Meeting of the Society of Friends, and relocated to Kortright, Delaware Co., NY, in 1794.

There are several problems with this identification of Mrs. Phebe Fish Post. For one, Elizabeth (Colemen) Gwinn was born in 1722, and therefore would have been 50 years old at the time of Mrs. Phebe Fish Post's birth if it occurred in 1772. Secondly, Phebe (Gwinn) Butts is apparently referred to in Quaker meeting records in September 1794 as having relocated to Kortright, NY. If she is referred to at the time with the surname Butts, rather than Fish, it presents a problem with chronology: Mrs. Phebe Fish Butts had her first child with Joseph Fish in February 1795.

These issues need to be resolved before it can be accepted that Mrs. Phebe Fish Post's maiden name was Gwinn. At the time, the idea is a hypothesis and questionable. Unfortunately, there are multiple family trees at which show her to be the daughter of Jonathan Gwinn and Elizabeth Coleman without qualification.
