Lieut Melvin Spence Dry
Birth: Mar. 13, 1946
Death: Jun. 6, 1972, Vietnam

United States Navy Lieutenant. He was a Navy SEAL on a classified secret mission part of "Operation Thunderhead", a rescue mission of two Prisoners of War who were set to escape from the "Hanoi Hilton" and steal a boat and travel down the Red River to the Gulf of Tonkin. Dry and another SEAL were to launch at night on June 3rd from the submerged diesel-electric submarine in a SEAL delivery vehicle and establish an observation post and watch for any sign of the escapees. The mission went on after an hours time, they aborted and were picked up a few miles off the North Vietnam coast having left the SDV. Two days later, they went back out to retrieve the vehicle searching for its beacon. Lights were spotted and the decision was made to drop into the water along with three others. He was killed immediately from "severe trauma to the neck" caused by impact with the water from 35 feet, according to the Navy's death report. Those that survived believed the jump was from nearly 60 feet 15 to 20 knots of forward velocity. The lights spotted were in fact a second vehicle team in that area. Lt Dry was the last SEAL killed during the Vietnam War.
