John Calvin "Bunk" Curls was the fourth of eight children born to William Roan Curls Sr. (ca. 1833-bef. 1880) and Emily (West) Curls (1835-aft. 1900.) He spent his early years in Mitchell County, Georgia, before moving to Colquitt County between 1880 and 1890.
Bunk married Sarah "Pun" Tucker on January 6, 1889. The marriage produced eight children (listed on Pun's memorial,) all but one of whom lived to adulthood. (Poor Pun lost her father, her husband, and her youngest child in the same year, 1910.)
J. C. Curls was by all accounts a kind man, a good friend, and a brilliant businessman... until he started drinking, which he did on many a Saturday night and on each of his birthdays; on those drunken evenings he turned into a mean and ornery man who would (and did) kill his best friend and who would (and did) lose a couple of small fortunes at the poker table (bless his heart.)
Bunk Curls died the day after his 48th birthday, when he had "an encounter" with Kip Murphy on the Moultrie, Georgia, courthouse square. "The Moultrie Observer" reported that Bunk "was drinking and tried to stab Murphy while Murphy in self-defense cut Curles to death." According to "The Macon Telegraph," after retreating once and being again attacked by Bunk, Mr. Murphy defended himself by disemboweling Bunk, cutting his throat from ear-to-ear, and stabbing him through the heart. According to the same newspaper, "Mr. Mrphey [sic] was slightly cut in serious places but, not dangerously so."
The Moultrie Observer summed up the situation thusly, "Both are men prominent, brave and fearless."
