Gabriel Vera Beltran
(March 21, 1975 - March 15, 2013)
Gabriel Beltran was born March 21, 1975 to Frank and Maria Beltran. He was the youngest of five children and held a special place in a large family that also included many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends and family alike will remember Gabriel as a sweet and gentle person who touched the lives of everyone he met. Life started out difficult for Gabriel because he was born with Down's syndrome and a heart condition that required many trips to the hospital in the first few years of his life. His brothers and sisters remember spending countless hours playing in waiting rooms while his parents were busy talking to doctors and nurses. Often their prognosis wasn't good, but Gabriel proved to have a fighting spirit with a strong will to live and he continually beat the odds that were stacked against him. When Gabriel was 2 ½ years old, Frank and Maria made the difficult decision to send Gabriel to live in Porterville because there were no schools in the area that met his needs. He was taken in by a registered nurse, June Lee, who took care of special needs children in her home. Her kindness and compassion for these children and the care she showed for Gabriel was greatly appreciated by his family. They remember how Gabriel always came home with his little suitcase full of brand new clothes that June had pick out for his visits to see his family. Weekends and holidays were special times when Gabriel came home to visit family and friends in Wasco. Everyone who knew Gabriel has their own fond memories of Gabriel growing up, how he greeted everyone with a friendly handshake or a wave, how a thumbs up meant everything was great with him, and how his sign of the "golden arches" meant he wanted something from McDonalds. Although he was limited in speech, Gabriel was able to reach out to people and bring out the best in them, even complete strangers. On family vacation trips to Disneyland, camping, or visiting family out of town, his family recalls how often people went out of their way to be friendly and helpful with Gabriel. When Gabriel was eighteen years old, he came home to stay. He attended Wasco's CSO where he made friends with staff and clients alike. At school, he enjoyed the many activities CSO has to offer, but friends remember how he enjoyed his puzzles, coloring books, and tinker toys best. At home, Gabriel relaxed by listening to his music and watching his sing along cartoons and Disney movies. His favorite was Dumbo. At family gatherings, whenever anyone was outside barbequing and listening to music, Gabriel always found his way out there to be a part of it. Although he had a simple life by all accounts, Gabriel's life was a testament of the sanctity of all human life. Gabriel taught us so many lessons in the years he was with us. He taught to never give up on life, that the simple things in life can bring you happiness, and that family and friends are important. Gabriel passed away on March 15, 2013; six days shy of his 38th birthday. He is survived by his parents, Frank and Maria Beltran and his siblings, brothers John and Espedie Beltran and sisters Isabel Juarez and Estela Ross, sisters-in-law Zeny and Lety Beltran, brothers-in-law Oliverio Juarez and Bobby Ross, nephews Michael Beltran, Jesse Beltran, Joshua Beltran, Robert Ross Jr., Oliver and Esteban Juarez, nieces Alexandra Allen, Ariah Hasha, Abigail Ross, Naomi Beltran, and Annalisa Juarez. He is preceded in death by grandparents Espiridion and Antonia Beltran and Eliborio and Juana Vera. The family would like to give a special thanks to all the CSO staff for their unending care and dedication to Gabriel and other clients like him and the ICU nurses at Mercy Southwest, Danielle, Shirley, Anthonia, and Angela, who took extra special care of Gabriel in his last days with us.
