John was the youngest of Dora Bell's five surviving children; Cecil, Mae, Clarence, Lola and John. His father Joe, had died when he was ten years of age, and there was plenty of work on the farm as he grew up. His six foot six inch height helped make him a star basketball player for Plainfield High School, just prior to the beginning of World War II. Upon graduation, John joined the Army Air Corps, and after completion of training, was stationed to England. Because of his height, he was restricted from flying, which ultimately probably saved his life. Instead, he was assigned to one of the trains transporting supplies from cargo ships to the various military bases in England.
He met and married Adelaide "Ada" Waywell and their marriage produced one daughter, Jennifer. This marriage
eventually broke up and John married Margarete who is now his widow.
John was a devoted automobile mechanic, taking after his older brother Clarence (Pappy), He had an amazing collection of pocket knives and had many older bicycles out in the barn.
Semper Fi, Uncle John.
We'll always remember you
