Pearl Patricia ‘Pat' Meyer was born December 16, 1914 in Madison, S. D. to Henry and Mary (Schmitgen) Meyer. She attended elementary school in the Lake Preston area and completed her freshman year of high school in the spring of 1928. Pat worked at the hotel in Onida for her room and board while attending high school. Later that year the family moved to a farm in the Gray Goose area North of Pierre and South of Onida. She began working as a waitress at the StatehouseCafé located in the Capital Building in Pierre. While living and working in Pierre she met and married Curtis James Palmer in 1934. After Pat and Curt divorced, her brother, Henry Meyer, offered Pat and her children a home on his farm North of Harrold. During this time, Pat raised turkeys for commercial distribution. The family will be forever thankful to ‘Uncle Henry' for all he gave and did for them. Pat was a loving and devoted mother to her three children, Marlene, Beverly, and Jim. In 1958 Pat moved to Harrold to care for her parents. In 1964 Pat sought employment outside of Harrold. She worked for a short time at Raven Industries in Huron. She missed being near her children and grandchildren so she moved to Pierre and became a checker at the Sooper Dooper Grocery Store. People were still recognizing her as their favorite checker who they would wait in line for. After retiring, Pat became involved with activities at the Senior Center. She referred to the center as her second home. She spent many hours recycling cards for resale and keeping the center decorated for every holiday. She was careful to never schedule appointments on Thursday since that was potluck and bingo day. Pat was a talented craftswoman. She was an excellent cake decorator, baking and decorating cakes for weddings, graduations and many other special occasions. Her family and friends were often the lucky recipients of her cross stitch, crocheting or sewing projects. She enjoyed traveling. Her travels included visiting family in Colorado, Missouri, South Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, South Carolina and winter trips to Hawaii, Florida and California. She enjoyed a visit with her Aunt Emma Harris (her father's sister) in San Antonio, Texas in 1964. When Pat moved to Lincoln Apartments she enjoyed the fellowship of other residents and continued to be active at the Senior Center. Watching the Price is Right Show on TV was a priority Monday through Friday. In May of 1994 BankWest honored Pat as their Senior Citizen of the Month celebrating with a special luncheon at the center. Pat was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pierre and was always willing to help the church staff fold bulletins and prepare mailings when they called. In January 2009 Pat moved to Kellys' Assisted Living and In October 2010 Pat became a resident at Maryhouse. Pat is survived by three very grateful children Marlene (Wilbur) Hoffman, Beverly (Ron) Ingle, Curtis James ‘Jim' (Marian) Palmer Jr., by 6 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, brothers Nick (Charlotte) Meyer, Melvin (Ann) Meyer , sister-in-law Naomi Meyer and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 grandchild, 4 brothers, 5 sisters and 4 brothers-in-law. Memorials may be directed to Countryside Hospice.
