Samuel and Dorothy had three sons, James Howard, Samuel Shell and John. Dorothy passed away in Indiana on Jan. 15, 1842. Her birthdate is unknown.
Samuel married Mary Eleanor Powers on July 16, 1843 in Putnam County, Indiana. They had 9 children between 1844 and 1866: Rachel Anna, Mary, George, Emily, Stephen, Albert, Jonathan, and twins May Belle and Francis.

Another Civil War record has his residence at time of enlistment as Ottumwa. He mustered out on Jun 30, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. The family was in Red Rock, Marion, Iowa in 1870. After Samuel passed away in 1872, Mary was in Des Moines, Polk, Iowa in 1880 with twins, May Belle and Francis and son-in-law O. B. Carter, husband of Mary Jane, probably deceased.
Mary E. Petty claimed a Civil War widows benefit in 1875 and May B. Hoyt applied for minors benefit in 1890 for herself, her twin, Frank, and her brother Jonathan. Mary Eleanor Petty died on March 20, 1884 in Blair, Nebraska. Burial unknown.
