BUGS, female, was a white/golden short- haired medium sized dog, with a round spot on the tip-top of her head; beautiful fox face; a super snuggle buddie. Nobody we knew ever had a "breed". They were all mutts, Heinz 57s, and our pals. Summertime in Kentucky was, as most places... HOT, and in the Ohio river valley add horrid humidity. Before we had a window fan, we each had a surplus army cot, and on especially torturous nights slept under a ginormous cottonwood tree in the backyard. Bugs would climb onto my cot and snuggle her muzzle under my chin. I don't have a large store of childhood memories as some seem to, but of those I have, many are of our sweet furries. One was being given the assignment of naming Bugs when she was a tiny li'l pup. And I remember how quickly her name came out of my mouth, little girl that I was. I don't know where Daddy found Bugs, but he prevented our ever being pet-free:) Mama loved them once they were part of our family, but it was not essential for her to have four-leggeds in her life as it was for Daddy. When Bugs had her litter, he let us pick one of her babies, and found homes for his mom and littermates. His family were dog lovers, and one of his brothers chose a pup that had white front stockings. They named him "Socks". To a little girl who thought "Bugs" was cute, their name was brilliant!

Look at that li'l girl's picture, and her babies. A good Mom! "Neuter" was an unknown concept to the masses in the '50s. "Litter-prevention" was accomplished by keeping your female up at all times while in heat, OR by having male dogs: they weren't kept up, you just didn't have to handle the litters from females who were accessible. So, prevention failed. The burden fell to the owner whose female, like Bugs, was outside without a chaperone even once. All those years fewer knew the sweet disposition of female dogs and cats, as they were passed over in favor of 'trouble-free' males... the li'l rascals:)

If I have any beliefs about immortality, it is that certain dogs I have known will go to heaven, and very, very few persons will.
