Dr. Marilyn L. Grotzka Stahlka Watt was the beloved wife of Rev. Dr. Trevor L. Watt and a devoted mother. Her greatest legacy lies in her work involving education, religion, family and women. She was a mentor to countless students.
Dr. Watt was a graduate and later an associate professor of the State University College at Buffalo. In 1975, she began active roles at Canisius College, first as an associate professor of communication, then as chair of the department from 1982-1993. Among the numerous committees she served on included Pre-Law Advisory, Women's Studies, Media Council, which she was chair for six years and was dean of Continuing Studies Advisory Council.
She served on the board of directors of the National Conference of Christians and Jews and until her death, was the director of the Radio-TV department of the Buffalo area Council of Churches. Dr. Watt produced and was the moderator of Challenge on WKBW-TV, a public affairs talk show. She was the producer and advisor of Ecumedia News on WGRZ-TV, a religious news program.
Dr. Watt was recognized for her accomplishments with many awards which include, from the National Organization of Women, the Women Helping Women Award, the Erie County Citizen's Award, the Scripps Howard Public Service Award and SUNY's Outstanding Citizen Award for Woman of the Year in Communication, to name a few.
Following her death, the Marilyn G.S. Watt Scholarship was established at Canisius College and is awarded annually to an incoming freshman communication major.
