27 Years, 4 Months, 22 Days - Obed died from grievous wounds suffered during the Battle for Port Royal Sound during the Civil War.

Obed was the youngest child born of thirteen and the youngest son of three born to Aaron John Calkins VII and Rachael Truesdell.

He married Mary Jane Sperry on 12 July 1855 in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut. Together they had one child, Ida Jane.

Obed enlisted in the United States Union Army on 6 September 1861 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut and was mustered in for active duty on 7 September 1861. He served with the 7th Connecticut Infantry, Company E. Obed died from grievous wounds suffered during the Battle for Port Royal Sound during the Civil War in Hilton Head Island, Beaufort, South Carolina.

Before entering the Army, he was a farmer.
