Edward D. "Ted" Harris, 87, long-time resident of Delta, died Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Utah of complications from an accidental gunshot wound.
Ted was born December 9, 1922 in Storrs, Utah to Edward Daniel and Cora Forster Harris.
He graduated from Delta High School, excelling in science and math. He taught himself about radios and cameras. While still in high school opened a photography business. Attended BYU before being drafted in the U.S. Navy, at beginning of World War II.
Excelled in radio-electronics. Later became instructor at the National Naval Academy in Washington, DC. Was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict where once again was proud to serve his country. Later returned to the Pacific Area as electronics specialist, where he established military communications systems on various islands, including the Philippines.
Ted established several businesses in Delta: taxi service, radio repair shop, photo studio and a lab. Gifted in many ways and taught himself how to cook, paint, cut gem stones and make beautiful jewelry. Owned and operated "Rancher Café", a favorite gathering place for many residents. Also operated "The Jade Garden" restaurant.
Ted was a loving son, brother, uncle who put others before himself. He was generous, kind and took care of his family, friends, even strangers. Provided work opportunities for many people. Was keenly aware of needs of others. In his own quiet way, took care of those needs. His generosity and spirit were felt throughout the community. He will be sorely missed.
Survived by brothers: Rex (Lois) and Robert (Iris) of Delta; Mark (Luree) of Cameron Park, CA; sister: Francis (Wes) Cummins of Honolulu, HI. Preceded in death by brother: John; sister: Anna Beth.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Delta Fourth Ward Chapel, 197 South 300 West. A viewing will be held on Wednesday evening from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at Nickle Mortuary and Thursday from 9:30-10:40 a.m. prior to the services.
Burial: Delta City Cemetery.
